Science Education from Many Perspectives

  • by

The new edited volume (Sammelband) „Es wird einmal …“ Wissen schaffen – Zukünfte erzählen (Sippl, Capatu & Krebs, 2025) explores how we can study a rapidly changing world while also developing ideas for sustainable futures. It highlights just how diverse, inspiring, and creative science education can be today.

At its core, the book brings together contributions from research and practice that understand science not as a rigid body of facts, but as a dynamic process of exploring, questioning, doubting, and creating. The perspectives range from school and university settings to cultural and artistic approaches that open up new ways of engaging with scientific inquiry.

What becomes clear throughout is that interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches are essential for enabling learners to understand the complex challenges of the Anthropocene—and to take an active role in shaping solutions. Science education emerges as an open space where scientific methods naturally interact with creative and artistic practices. This combination encourages learners to imagine their own future scenarios and to see science as a tool for shaping society.

The volume builds on a symposium developed in collaboration between the Sparkling Science project „Es wird einmal …“ and the Interdisciplinary Network for Science Education in Lower Austria (INSE). It brings together key insights from two projects that not only reflect on science and futures education, but also put them into practice and continue to advance them.
