While the school year draws to a close, the opportunity for learning does not. Last week, we had several workshops with school students of different age groups in the Haus der Wildness, Lunz.
The Haus der Wildnis is the UNESCO World Heritage Center in Lunz am See and offers unique insights into the primeval forest in the Alps in the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal wilderness area. Along with it’s modern exhibition, the Haus der Wildnis has a learning laboratory to offer children the opportunity to learn about the diversity of habits and their animal world.

In partnership between WasserCluster Lunz and Haus der Wildnis, we carried out workshop on ‘What lives in the water’ and with the sun shining on Lunz, took the opportunity to have our science days outside in the Seebach to sample invertebrates and learn about the dynamics of the flowing water. We also gave students the opportunity to use our microscopes to take a better look at some of the creatures they found in the water.
We at INSE are huge advocates for hands-on-learning and educational experiences which encourage students to actively participate in science.
The workshops were a hit and students left with an appreciation of nature and could distinguish the main groups of invertebrates living in the Lunzer Seebach including mayfly larvae, caddis fly larvae, dragonfly larvae and even little fish!
