The natural sciences fascinate with their diversity and their ability to reveal the secrets of nature. But what exactly is science? How much creativity is allowed? And why do scientists often talk about provisionality?
These questions were explored by the students of the 3rd and 4th grades of Lunz middle school, guided by two master’s students from the University of Vienna, with the help of the “Puzzle cube”. They took on the role of scientists and faced the great challenge of developing solutions with incomplete data. The role of creativity, subjectivity and provisionality, as well as the difference between observation and inference, became particularly clear in this educational activity.
During the summer semester, as part of INSE’s pilot study, a total of six different activities will be carried out at the Lunz middle school to familiarize students with different characteristics of scientific research. We aim to promote understanding of the natural sciences and inspire young minds for the world of research. The next activity is just around the corner: the students will explore a mysterious tube in more detail. We are already looking forward to their curiosity and enthusiasm!
