Sparking Curiosity, Experiencing Research: Science Workshops in the “Environmental Research 2.0” Project

  • by

As part of the Talente regional project Environmental Research 2.0, we provide schools with insights into the world of research to foster scientific literacy, critical thinking, and engagement with environmental issues. The aim is to give students hands-on experience with scientific practices and to demonstrate how research helps us understand and shape our environment. Through a series of consecutive workshops over two school years with the same partner schools (two lower secondary schools and three primary schools in the region), students are able to continuously build and deepen their knowledge.

In March 2026, we carried out science workshops with our partner schools. The workshop “Scientific Research: Discover, Understand, Apply” introduced students to the fundamental principles of scientific inquiry. Through hands-on activities and small research tasks, participants explored methods, developed their critical thinking skills, and experienced the research process in an active and collaborative way.

For the lower secondary level, the workshop “Characteristics of Science” focused on key aspects of scientific thinking, such as working with evidence, dealing with uncertainty, and understanding the iterative nature of research. Interactive exercises and tasks helped make these concepts tangible and accessible.

For primary schools, “The Forest of the Future” was at the center of the activities. Through storytelling and creative approaches, children were introduced to scientific ways of working. They explored possible environmental futures and learned how observation, interpretation, and imagination contribute to the creation of knowledge.

Overall, the workshops aimed to make science accessible and relevant, encouraging students to explore their environment with curiosity and to think critically about the world around them.
