‘Anthropocene’ – Cultural sustainability

We are living in the age of the Antropocene – our current geological era is shaped by human activity that has altered the global climate and environment to the point where we are reaching certain tipping points that we may not be able to come back from.

The term Anthropocene can also be seen as a cultural concept in which we can reflect on sustainable development and how we can reshape these human-nature relationships.

The “Learning and Teaching the Anthropocene” project at the University of Teacher Education of Lower Austria is alligned with the vision of INSE – to create a sustainable framework for science education.

This educational framework invites students to change their perspective on the interactions between humans and nature and invites educators to conceptualise transformative learning.

Students are encouraged through theory-based and hands-on examples, to understand interactions occuring in our anthropocentric world, including culture, technology, business and community etc.

As a platform for science education and science communication, we at INSE value the sharing of ideas and want to share a blog by one of our partners, Carmen Sippl of PHNÖ. The “Anthropozän Blog” can be found following this link or at the footer of our website. This blog innovatively deals with culture and sustainability for education processes and is the narrative of the school of the future.
