Equity in Science

  • by

We at INSE align ourselves with equitable practice and want to ensure that those previously excluded from science, are encouraged to play their own part. As part of our hands-on-approach to science education, we want students to work side by side with us, to share ideas and ensure everyone has a say. Check out our blog post on ‘What we stand for’.

“Equity refers to a model of social justice that attempts to challenge and transform social inequalities and work towards more just power relations. Whereas equality often means treating everyone the same and/ or providing the same opportunities to all, an equity approach advocates differential treatment according to need, while also recognising and valuing differences between people.”

We encourage everyone to ensure that their own scientific practice is equitable. This means that we should each reflect on not just what we do, but how we do it. The way we practice science has great potential to either reinforce or transform social inequalities.

YESTEM (Youth Equity + Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a collaborative research and development project for more equitable and just informed STEM learning. Check out their website below, which is full of helpful tools and resources. Their partnership identifies and shares examples of how informed STEM learning can be inclusive and valuing and support particularly young people from communities that are excluded from STEM.
